Work Assessments
Why have an assessment?
Workstation assessors often cite the Health and Safety DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as a primary reason to employ a workstation assessor. Whilst it is important to fulfil these regulations, (see www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg36.pdf for some details), another reason to get your workspace assessed is so that your employees stay healthy and productive, working to the best of their abilities, without back pain etc. to distract them. This requires more than just basically good set up. Your employees need to understand what they need to do (it is not all down to employers) and why they need to do it.
A large component of our assessments involve talking to the employee, helping them to understand how they might minimise any stress associated with long term computer use.
Why choose back at work?
Osteopaths are some of the best professionals around at understanding how human bodies work, especially from a postural standpoint. This means that I can very quickly see what is not working for your employees and more importantly why.
Working in my clinic, performing thousands of consultations, has given me an excellent understanding of how to work with individuals to help them correct their posture and develop good habits. Every person is different and I can quickly work out the right approach to take to get the best possible results.
I am also able to integrate clinical information with the workstation assessment to provide an in depth look at the impact an individual’s working environment may be having on their health.
What’s involved?
One on one workstation assessments are conducted at the employee’s desk. I will begin by discussing concerns they may have and finding out about the requirements of their work. Following this an assessment of the workstation is made and any changes that need to be made are explained to the individual. Finally the principles of good seated posture are explained and strategies for the individual to implement these are discussed.
Following the assessment a report is provided for each individual. These will detail all the areas I have assessed, any changes that have been made and any changes that are advised.
Will I need to buy lots of expensive equipment?
This is usually not the case. More often than not changes that need to be made are simple and inexpensive. Where more expensive equipment is needed e.g. chairs, I can provide advice on where to source good quality products that are reasonably priced. I limit myself to advice and information and am not involved in selling equipment directly.
Follow up service
We all know good habits can take time to establish so I have developed a one on one postural training program that can follow on from the workstation assessments. This is a service that can be offered to employees who wish to learn a little more about their postures and how to improve them.
This program involves a detailed postural assessment followed by exercise and postural training. Elements of flexibility and core stability training are incorporated into this effective approach.
Additional services
Clinical DSE Assessment
Ongoing musculoskeletal disorders may require more in depth examination to adequately assess the impact of working conditions on their outcome. By combining a detailed clinical history physical examination with a DSE assessment I am able to provide this more comprehensive assessment. This assessment can be adapted to suit your particular needs.
